Ellesmere Primary pupils rise to orienteering challenge

Istanbul and Moscow classes from Ellesmere Primary School travelled to the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre to navigate their way around Onny Meadows orienteering course last week.Orienteering away from the school site was one of the pupils’ PE objectives and everyone was very excited about taking part in the adventurous trip.

Luckily, it was a beautiful, crisp Spring day and the children started by learning compass skills and how to create and navigate their way around the course. This included ensuring they kept their maps pointing north – not as easy as it looks!

During the afternoon, the children worked in small groups armed with a map and a compass to perfect their skills independently.

At the end of the day, Thomas from Istanbul Class said: “We all had a brilliant time and so much fun.”

Oliver from Moscow class agreed, saying:“It was the best year 5 trip yet!”
