A quacking name for Acresfield Primary School’s new nursery

Parents and children have chosen a quacking name for the new nursery at Acresfield Primary School – Ducklings.

The purpose-built nursery opened in September within the school’s building and boasts a large outdoor play area complete with garden, mud kitchen and access to forest school.

Inside is a well-stocked reading, construction, role play and topic area.

But it needed a name, and Ducklings was the winning suggestion after a vote was held.

Headteacher Mike Dixon explained: “We regularly hear the animals at nearby Chester Zoo, particularly at feeding times, so it has been the obvious choice to name our classes after them – we already have Tiger Cubs, Meerkats, Penguins, Otters, Komodo Dragons, Orangutans and Jaguars.

“We had lots of great suggestions for the nursery, but ducklings took the final vote and I think it is the perfect name to tie in with our theme.”

The 26-place nursery, for three-to-four year olds, operates an extended school day from 7.50am to 5pm and is led by Early Years Teacher Aimee Montgomery.

She said: “It was quite a large majority who chose Ducklings and the children love the new name!

“Next week we will be learning a little about ducklings, and we’ll be creating our own duckling pictures using mixed media as well as exploring the story ‘The Ugly Duckling’.”

Acresfield Primary School joined North West Academies Trust (NWAT) on October 1, and now shares resources with other NWAT schools, including Delamere Academy.

Both schools have been named this week amongst the top schools in the country by The Times, based on SATs results. Out of more than 32,000 state primaries Acresfield were 75th and Delamere 128th.

Steve Docking CEO of NWAT is delighted with the move.

He said: “Acresfield are already hugely successful, not only in terms of their excellent SATs results, but also because they are a thriving school with happy, engaged children.

“The school shares our goal; to provide children with opportunities to aspire and succeed, and open their eyes to the wonderful world of possibility.

“By working together, we are now able to provide even more of these opportunities for children to get the best possible education.”
