A 24 Carat Arts Accolade for Delamere Academy

Delamere Academy have struck gold thanks to their commitment to providing pupils with a ‘wide range of arts and cultural activities’.

The primary, near Northwich, have been bestowed with the Artsmark Gold Award which recognises schools who put arts, culture and creativity at the heart of their curriculum.

The gold status is reward for the hard work of teachers and pupils to improve the arts provision, and another step along the way towards the ambition of turning platinum.

The Artsmark assessment said: “Delamere Church of England Academy Primary is to be commended for its commitment to providing a wide range of arts and cultural activities.

“Staff work hard to provide stimulating and interactive resources – both teachers and pupils appear to have worked flexibly throughout lockdown with opportunities via live streaming or pre-recorded videos.

“The introduction of Arts Awards has enabled pupils to gain formal accreditation for their work and it is good how this scheme is being embedded. Opportunities to showcase and celebrate pupil and staff talents have been taken, and the range of instrumental opportunities available for pupils through the local music hub has been increased.”

Two years ago, Delamere established their own pupil-led Arts Council which sees pupils in Year 6 meet with staff to discuss the delivery of arts.

Ideas are exchanged at regular meetings and children work alongside teachers to implement improvements

Teacher Clare Wild said: “We’re delighted to receive the Artsmark Gold Award. A lot of hard work went into attaining this status because we feel that arts and culture are an important part of children’s education and we are determined it is never overlooked.

“Every child here produces work which is unique to them, they put their own ideas into it and we encourage that. Being able to show their creative side is enjoyable and good for their wellbeing.

“They find the activities relaxing and their artwork looks lovely and bright around the school. We’ve also sent displays to various places in the community, including care homes, and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback.

“Our ambition is to achieve platinum status in the future so the hard work will continue.”

Delamere Academy is rated outstanding by Ofsted and is part of North West Academies Trust (NWAT), which runs schools across Cheshire and Shropshire.
